Itoh Lifetime Peony Collection
Breeders tried for centuries to cross a tree peony with a herbaceous peony, and create a hybrid with the best qualities of both. In 1948, Dr. Toichi Itoh, a Japanese horticulturalist, finally succeeded--and the Itoh peony was born. Until recently, these incredible, colourful plants were scarce and difficult to reproduce, and gardeners could expect to pay $1,000 or more for one. But due to new propagation techniques. Itoh peonies are much more available--and affordable!
Breck's is delighted to offer this exceptional Itoh Lifetime Peony Collection.
Includes one each of Bartzella, Cora Louise and Julia Rose.
- Bartzella: Uniquely yellow, extra-large flowers reaching 6-8" across form on a robust, winterhardy plant--and the blooms keep coming on side shoots for an entire month or more. Strong, woody stems hold the fragrant flowers upright, even after a heavy rain. The bush is dark green with lovely, large, deeply cut leaves. A very strong grower and prolific spreader, it makes a medium-large bush. Grand Champion flower of the 2002 American Peony Society Exhibition.
- Cora Louise: Produces up to 50 fragrant, semi-double flowers measuring 8–10" per season. White blooms have deep lavender centres. Forms a midsize bush of attractive, lush green leaves. Plant them in borders or containers as well as garden beds. Marvelous for bouquets and other cut-flower arrangements. Butterflies, honeybees and hummingbirds can’t get enough of this one!
- Julia Rose: In a kaleidoscopic display, single to semi-double flowers open a cherry red before fading to orange and then later to yellow. Plants can show all three colours at the same time. Sturdy stems for cutting and a treat for pollinators. An excellent garden plant whose firm stems make the blooms great for cutting. Foliage is rich deep green becoming burnished with pewter in autumn.
